And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. Genesis 2:2 I have a confession. This week while setting up my office at my new call, (Nativity Lutheran Church, Palm Beach Gardens FL...woot woot) I had a Pinterest moment of inspiration. Yes, I said Pinterest. Fellas, before you think it necessary to revoke my man card, allow me to explain. While unpacking my professional library, I thought it would be "aesthetically pleasing to the eye" for my books to be arranged on the shelves by color. See picture above. Thanks to the efforts of my daughter Lydia I have ROYGBIV going on.  Looks good, right?  Now part of my reasoning for going against my typical ordering of books by topic (theology, pastoral care, leadership etc.) was that I really don't use my books all that much. They have almost come to be a ruse of sort. I haven't read half of those books, and the appearance of them

A Journal and a Key

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 A few days ago, my daughter Lydia returned from a trip to Sanibel Island with a gift for my youngest daughter Mara.  She was thrilled to have her very first journal, replete with mermaid cover, and lock with key to keep the thoughts and artistry of a 6-year old safe. It was the perfect gift for a little girl who’s reading and writing skills have exploded this summer. Post it notes with hastily scribbled “I love you”, “I am sorry”, “Can we go to the pool”, and whatever else pings in her little mind is her thing at the moment.  Yesterday Mara came to me, journal key with yarn in hand, and asked, “Dad

Ecclesiastes 7:9 Do not be quick to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.

The book of Ecclesiastes (written by King Solomon) is of a genre called wisdom literature. I am not wise. I have never stayed in a Holiday Express. However, I am wise to the fact anger can, and has at times gotten the best of me.   Who are you angry at? Is it ok to be angry? Jesus flipped tables and verbally scolded so-called religious know-it-alls. That was the human side of Jesus. The divine side of our long haired 1st century hippy did not anger so quickly. The key word being…quickly. That does not mean we are to stew a while before vomiting our anger burdened selves on ourselves, or someone else. Because that after all would be, human. But, having been created in the image of God, know that you are divine, holy, of loftier origins, of greater beginnings than hate, anger and so on.  So, take a moment. When you want to cuss out and flip the bird…or shake the snot out of…beat the piss out of…talk trash about…hold a grudge towards…devalue yourself, maybe the answer is to get holy for
